Lake Beach

Serene Lakes are a pair of freshwater lakes (Serena and Dulzura) within the residential community of the Pinewood Cabin. Less than 1 mile from the cabin, you will find a good size sandy beach on south end of lake Serena. This area offers an abundance of activities including beach volleyball (two courts), horseshoes, sand castle building, and swimming. Bring your own equipment and enjoy canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and stand up paddle boarding.


Downhill Skiing

There are many downhill ski options within a short distance from the cabin: Sugar Bowl Resort (3.3 miles), Soda Springs (0.9 miles), Donner Ski Ranch (3.9 miles), and Boreal Mountain (4.4 miles). Adventure a little further and you will find these downhill ski options: Palisades Tahoe (23 miles) and Northstar (22 miles).


Mountain Biking

There are an abundance of single track mountain biking trails around the cabin and on Donner Summit. You can find more information on these trails at On the Summit and the MTB Project. There are also trails in and around Truckee, which can be found here on the MTB Project website and here on Trailforks.


Hiking

There are a plethora of hiking trails that are within easy access of the Pinewood Cabin. AllTrails lists the 10 best hiking trails in Soda Springs here. Additionally, they list the best hiking trails in Donner Memorial State Park here.


Cross Country Skiing

Royal Gorge spans over 6,000 acres and offers 6 distinct trail systems featuring 8 different warming huts. Whether you prefer classic striding, XC skating or snowshoeing, you will find a trail that fits your needs. You can even enjoy trails with your dog! View the XC trail map here.

Watersports

The fresh water of Lake Serena and Lake Dulzura provides an opportunity to enjoy a wide range of watersports. Swimming from the beach at the south side of Lake Serena is one of the most popular lake activities. The Pinewood Cabin has a canoe with paddles that can be used for those staying at the property (guests must move the canoe to and from the lake by their own means, and wear a life jackets at all times while in the canoe). Otherwise, you will need to bring your own equipment to enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, stand up paddle boarding and more.
